+1: Now making Display ads more relevant

Labels: AdSense features , Other Google products
Earlier today we announced several exciting new additions to Google+, including open signups. We’d like to announce one more addition for our AdSense publishers, +1 on the Google Display Network.
Starting in October, the +1 button will begin to appear on display ads on your site. With a single click, people will now be able to endorse specific ads and make them more likely to appear to their social connections. We believe that these recommendations could lead your readers to notice ads on your site more, leading to more clicks and higher returns for you over time.
For example, take Susan, who sees an ad for a good deal on flights. She +1’s the ad, thinking her friends might value this deal. Now, when Susan’s friends and contacts are signed in to their Google accounts, they’ll be able to see Susan’s picture across the bottom of the ad, with a note saying she +1’d it.

The +1 button and recommendations will appear at the bottom of display ads.
Susan’s friends and contacts will also be more likely to see the ad. While the dynamics of our ad auction aren’t changing, the ad will now be included in the auction for the pages Susan’s friends visit, as we know recommendations from friends can be a strong signal of an ad’s relevance.
+1’s will be one additional signal that help determine an ad’s relevance. All eligible ads will continue to compete in the ad auction, and we’ll continue to show the ones that will generate the most revenue for you. +1 button clicks are not counted as clicks on ads. Although you won’t receive any revenue for +1 button clicks, +1’s will help AdSense to deliver more useful ads to your users, which we think will result in higher returns over time.
On mobile, the +1 button will replace the existing ‘g’ logo and recommendations will appear for several seconds, then fade out.
The +1 button will begin to appear on AdSense for content and AdSense for mobile content display ad formats--image, animated gif, and Flash ads. If you’d prefer not to allow the use of +1 features and social annotations on display ads on your pages, you can opt out starting today by signing in to your account at google.com/adsense.
Display ads become much more powerful when people can see which of their connections have chosen to endorse them, leading to a better advertising experience and higher returns for you.
If you’d like to learn more about the +1 button on display ads, please visit the AdSense Help Center.

Where's the "-1" (minus 1) button for all the cr*p content that's a waste of webspace. Some balance would be welcome imo.

Hi Christian, are users effectively +1 the ad, or the ad's destination page?

This is a great idea, Goog! While your semantic ad placement is pretty good, this new dynamic will only make it better. Also, people don't generally like ads, but if you give them an opportunity to "rate" them, it might make ads more attractive to the masses. I believe that those who adopt this new feature will see an uptick in CTR.

Publishers should be compensated for rich media interactions. Isn't this worth something? What if the advertiser eventually makes a sale because of the +1 click? In that case the publisher would get nothing but a fraction of a penny for the impression.
At least give credit for clicks on the links created FROM the +1 interactions. Eventually Google could be selling products through a widget but not paying the publisher because there was no actual clickthrough in the classic sense.
Sure this lowers the publisher's "bounce rate" (whatever that means) and increases relevancy, but don't forget the value the publisher created for Google and the advertiser--your ability to collect more data and sharpen your targeting is due to the publisher's hard work.
Publishers need to keep an eye on trends like this--make sure you're getting paid for what your ad spots are really worth because advertisers will try to get as many sales as they can without paying for clicks--which is fine if there's a direct relationship with the advertiser and a fixed rate for the spot. This smells like typical click program exploitation, like showing the "dot-com" name in the ad or "shaving" clicks. Don't forget why you pay for clicks in the first place. Content is king.

Sorry but +1 for advertisements doesn't make any sense to me at all. Shouldn't the user be able to review and test out the specific product or website first (the advertisement is showing)? After they are at the landing page or maybe even days after they used the product how do you expect them to find the +1 for that AD? If the user click on the +1 first before using the product, how would the user know how good that product is before seeing it? I can understand +1 for webpages, but +1 for ads, the logic just doesn't make sense to me.

Great. Something else on adsense ads that will keep me from making money from clicks. Why would I want to allow a feature on adsense on my sites that distracts users from clicking on the ads and earning me revenue, and instead votes on the user's feelings about the ad? How stupid is that for an adsense publisher to participate in? No clicks down the road from the friends of anyone who votes, will earn my sites revenue; it is just another possibility to reduce adsense income. If after years of running adsense you need the general public to tell you how to target ads, there is no hope for you google. I think you are just trying to find a second way to revive a dead social media button nobody cares a hoot about.

The only question I have is if this is implemented, will I still earn revenue when the button is clicked? I am just worried that this will encourage them to click the +1 button and I will not earn anything.

Is this going tobe for image ads only? I really hope so, it seems like many pages now could be completely overwhelmed with +1 buttons: A +1 button the webmaster has included for their own content, and +1 buttons for each ad on the page... seems like it could be confusing.

Well done Google..another completely stupid idea...can you say invalid clicks?
Also I highly doubt any relevant information will be conveyed to the advertiser...
Google +1 is a massive failure, incorporate it into all the Google services you like but it will still be a dead entity within a year.

I would definitely like to see a -1 button for all the rubbish ads that are out there, but the trouble would be that while advertisers might not be able to +1 their own ads, they could certainly go around -1-ing every one of their competitor's ads.

I really dont think all the publishers would appreciate putting +1 buttons next to the ads. It gives the visitor more options to click on thereby reducing clicks on the ads itself.
Anyway here is a post i did on how to remove the +1 button from ads for those of you who don't want the +1 button next to your ads :
Remove +1 Button from AdSense
Hope it helps...

I agree with the poster Ferodynamics. My opinion is that clicking the +1 button should bring some compensation. After all, for someone to +1 an ad, you hope they have at least taken a moment to look at it. Or, if they are just endorsing a product, the advertiser is given feedback about their product. This has value to the advertiser. I spend a lot of time creating the content for my blogs and think that there should be some compensation - even though it may be slight - for delivering that +1 data to an advertiser!

This feature makes sense on web pages, not so much on ads. All the more reason for companies to try for organic results in Google and other search engines rather than pay for clicks. Just make good content.

The +1 feature by Google is one of the more stupider ideas in recent time by them.
Who uses it really? No one.
Who cares about +1? No one.
The whole +1 idea is stupid and a waste of time and money.

Hi guys you should provide an option to manage our sponsored +1 apart from our other +1s
And one important thing is that google should display my +1 to people in my social connections. Not if iam present in their social connection. Thank you

Just a question: won't this increase invalid clicks? There is a tendency for people to instead of doing a +1, accidentally clicked the ad.
Thanks

Hey these new bells and whistles are swell guys, but you see, I simple cannot log in to my alleged account. Funny I get your notices (such as the one that led me here) but there's no way to log in. I know why, but there's no fix! TMALSS, I don't have the "reject letter" to get any code from. If I ever even got a reject letter, I don't remember it & don't have it. Short of legally changing my name and SS#, there's no possibility of me logging in to my account. The irony is, there are still Google ads on my website, and I can't access anything about my account.
How does a company exist and thrive as Google does with no human contact (voice over a telephone, and is it just that Google doesn't want to mess with the common man but instead seeks the big corporate cash?

Will not be implemented/will be opted out.
QUOTE
"Display ads become much more powerful when people can see which of their connections have chosen to endorse them, leading to a better advertising experience and higher returns for you."
That is fantasy land and misleading unless you consider $00.02 a higher return - there are too many badly designed ads/trashy/spammy ads as it is without watering things down even further.
The general public do not, and will not spend time studying and endorsing ads - they may endorse a landing page or website, but ads no!
While Adsense may be king of contextual advertising due to "size" they are definitely stuck in the year 2003 when it comes to graphics, design, and quality.
No more buttons - Thank you!
