How integrating new ad sizes helped CareerPlanner.com increase revenue by 165%

In 1997, CareerPlanner.com founder Michael Robinson decided to pursue his passion of helping people discover their true career directions. He initially wanted to go into high schools and work directly with students, but decided instead to start a website so that he could keep his day job. Today, CareerPlanner.com helps high school students, college students, and adults alike discover their optimal career paths and learn how to start careers or make career changes.
In 2007, Michael and CareerPlanner.com's top graphic designer realized that 2.5 million visitors per year weren't purchasing any CareerPlanner.com products. "These visitors were clearly looking for something, but it was not anything we offered," says Michael, so they decided to give AdSense a try. Today, AdSense is on over 95% of CareerPlanner.com’s pages and the site receives over 5.5 million visitors a year. The revenue from Google AdSense now helps fund CareerPlanner.com’s Research and Development efforts, IT expansion, as well as special marketing projects that they always wanted to try but could never afford.
Getting more out of AdSense
Following advice from the AdSense team, Michael decided to update his AdSense ad units with the goal of increasing performance. Instead of the three 120 x 600 skyscrapers that had been running one on top another down the right side of each page, Michael began running one 160x600 wide skyscraper on the left column, one 300 x 250 medium rectangle in the center, integrated into his content below the fold, and one 160 x 600 wide skyscraper on the right column. Michael also changed the color scheme of the ad units to match the color scheme of his webpages. Initially, Michael made these changes to 75% of his pages. Within one month, his AdSense for content revenue increased 80%.
The initial revenue growth CareerPlanner.com saw in the first month inspired Michael to take the time to implement the same changes on more of his pages. Today, Michael has optimized 99% of his pages and increased his AdSense for content revenue by 165%.
"The best news," says Michael, "is that since we have made the optimization changes, our Google AdSense revenue has been setting new records every month."

How come this career site does not have google adsense ads on the website? Should we believe this success story or not? I see no ads on the site. False advertising.

Thanks for this case study! I'm inspired, as I have also learned recently that moving ad units around and experimenting with different sizes can make a HUGE difference.

I have not been able to get in contact with adsense to correct an issue. I cannot find a number or even an email address to contact for a correction. Its a very important financial matter, and it seems very unprofessional to have to spend an hour or more trying to find a contact link for an adsense rep to end up just having to post on this blog to (hopefully) get some attention. If an adsense rep reads this, please, please contact me. harris.gary.c at gmail

May be he turned the Google AdSense ads in order to prevent "accidental" clicks, while people check his website. There is Google Custom Search (also known as AdSense for search), where Google AdSense ads DO appear.

Wow over 5.5 million visitors a year. Too bad they probably dont want to share their CTR and how much the revenue is in a year. That is something I would realy be interested in.

I have in excess of 30 websites with Adsense on all, most in the same positions you are suggesting. I earn between 0-$3.50 per day average approx.$1.00 per day. Some of my sites are no.1 with Google most are in top ten. I need to work out why so little income. Very frustrating, must be me.
Best regards Steve

I have been with adsense for 8 years and I can definitely see a downward trend in earnings. My suspicion is that it is a case of smart pricing.
Plus, when I see sites like this career site being promoted by google and then find out the guy has yanked a lot of his adsense ads the writing is on the wall - the guy has decided adsense is a low return on investment or a poor use of valuable site real estate.

I liked the points made, and tried to +1, but all I got was a confusing set of directions to create a profile. All I wanted to do was say "this looks good."
I think I need to remove the +1 links from my web site - they amount to harrasment of my visitors.

I have had a fairly positive experience with Adsense. I have seen ups and downs all mostly related to SEO and directly proportional to the amount of traffic. Recently I have noticed a slight increase. I would encourage everyone to experiment with placements and unit types. Once I found the right combinations for my site I saw a dramatic increase in revenue.

I'm glad Mr. Robinson has found success but how many sites have 5.5 million visitors per year? The message seems to be that AdSense is for the largest sites.
How about examples with more typical sites? I'd be impressed with a site that saw visits rise from 100 a day to 200 or from 500 a day to 1,000 -- and could also show rising ad revenues.
AdSense has been very good for my site. I have ads in several forms but would always like to learn more.

Google suggested me to change my image ads to support both image and text. Also I put 2 200by200 image/text ads just above the content. I think having an image ad within the content can mislead users into thinking the ad is about the article. Therefore, I don't put the ad inside the article content.
Thank you. I have modified some of my pages at try-free-sample. Lets see how it goes. :)

I don't agree with the optimization statement about adsense on 80% of the pages. A quick browse of the website and I couldn't find any adsense ads. I had to come back to the comments page to find a link to a page with adsense on it.
Strange...

It seems they have removed the google ads from most of the site and only some pages have ads now. That article was written in September 2009, and it was true back then, but not now.
What this article should do is to encourage you to experiment on your own. Google had some articles about this, that tell you where ads do best.
I see a few people asking why less money is made in pakistan and india. That is probably because advertisers are less willing to offer payment for ads there. For example, if I was selling a product that only shipped in the USA, I would limit the ads to only display in the US. If I had another product that did ship to india and pakistan, but my margins were smaller or the ROI was lower because it took more clicks to get a sale, I would have an ad specifically for those countries and I would lower my bid price.
If your site attracts americans, they should see American ads, that probably get more income, remember also, that google is now displaying ads that don't match your content - they may match what they think the reader is interested in.

Google's efforts to help its bloggers earn more money is admirable, but it might help them more by increasing their percentage take a bit, which would give them more incentive to continue blogging, thus benefitting Google too.

Our Adsense advertising is lower per click through than usual, at the moment, but that may be a seasonal effect. Can anyone suggest by how much costs should be expected to vary seasonally? Has Google written about this? I haven't been able to find anything.
