Display both text and image ads for an easy change with big impact

FunCheapSF.com is an online resource for finding free or affordable events in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founder Johnny Hayes recently shared his site’s story with us and gave some tips on an easy and high impact way that he’s optimized his revenue -- by enabling both text and image/rich media ads.

Inside AdSense: How did FunCheapSF.com come about?
Johnny Hayes: I moved to San Francisco without a job and couldn’t find much work, so I had a lot of time on my hands. I spent my time hunting down cheap and free things to do in the city and, starting in 2003, began emailing my friends with a weekly list of activities. More friends found out and wanted to be added to my email list, so I decided it was time to make a real website.

IA: How did you get started with AdSense?
JH: I began using AdSense in March 2007. It was my first source of online advertising revenue. As content developed on my site and traffic grew, my AdSense revenue grew as well.

IA: Why did you decide to opt in to both text and image/rich media ads?
JH: Several months ago, I received an email from AdSense letting me know that I hadn't opted in to displaying text ads and was only displaying image ads.

I had originally chosen to only show image ads because I figured they were more aesthetically appealing to my readers. But Google’s reasoning – which made sense to me – was that even though there’s tons of advertisers using image ads, there’s a bunch more out there who are specifically bidding on text ads. If I’m only showing image ads then I’m leaving the text advertisers out of the auction. And since these text ads would only be shown on my site if they outbid image ads, why not offer this space to them?

So I decided to give the text ads a shot. It seemed like an easy thing to do that might have a positive impact on my revenue with virtually no downside.

IA: What were the results? Would you recommend this strategy to other publishers?
JH: After enabling both text and image ads on my site, I saw a 51% revenue increase and nearly a 60% increase in average eCPM. It was an easy change with a big impact. And using AdSense means I don't have to worry about the laborious task of finding and managing advertisers myself and can instead focus my time on what I like to do – writing good content, putting together a great site and growing my business. I just plugged in the AdSense code and rarely have to think about it again.

I would say to other publishers that it’s worth giving the option for both text and image ads a try. It's pretty easy to set up – I just followed the instructions in the email I had received from AdSense and it took just a few minutes. Also, set up channels to track your ads so you can see specifically which of your ad locations and ad types are monetizing well, and continue with that.

If you want to give text and image ads a try like Johnny, click here to upgrade your units now!

  • Once you're signed in to your AdSense account, click the "My Ads" tab in the new AdSense interface
  • Select all ad units
  • From the "Actions" dropdown, edit ad type to "Text & Image / rich media ads"
  • Set up custom channels to monitor the impact on your AdSense performance
Check out the images below to see where to enable both text and image ads in your account using the new AdSense interface:

Nice to know about Mr Hayes' experience in experimenting with both image and text ads. I have too been using both of them, as that what helps in getting the maximum income.

An AdSense account does not exist for this login, as your application is currently in review. Within a week of your application date, we'll review your application and follow-up with you via email. Once you are approved to join AdSense, you'll be able to log in to your account and get started.

Two comments:

1. I've tried A/B comparisons of text & image ads versus text ads only, and on my site text ads have about a 50% higher eCPM than text & image. So text & image isn't always the best solution.

2. I've tried enabling text & image ads on multiple ad units, and have discovered that very often, the same image ad will pop up in both units. Not only does this look terrible, but it doesn't make any sense to display the same ad twice. I've seen other websites with the same problem. To maximize ad exposure on a site, you really need to fix this.

Nice article! Only I had the opposite. I had text ads only and have now added text and image! Revenue definitely went up!

Nice to know about this but I already tried that, ran tests with different ways. Found this particular one didn't benefit one bit, lost too much so am sticking to the one working far better - text only because my site is very specific and there aren't enough companies with image ads to make it worthwhile - yet.

Hi, Today I received the adsense news letter for my blog smsinhindi.com to enable adsense unit(336*180) for bot text & images... What I have notice is that when I enable both then I got maximum click and more people leave my site (less time on site) and if I keeps only image then click are less and people spend more time on site...
In both case, I earn same $$ from that adsense unit.. in 1st case more click but less cpc & in 2nd case, less click but more cpc.. So I decided to keep it only image ads...
Just want to know, am I wrong? Anyway, I am again going to enable it for both type of adse and will see if it improve further.

Great to see so much experimentation!

@Animesh: By enabling both text and image ads, you allow all eligible ads to compete in the auction to appear on your site. Sometimes text ads will bid higher than image ads and vice-versa, so by allowing both to show you're not limiting your profitability within a certain ad type.

User behavior on each site is going to be unique, of course, so we definitely encourage you to run tests and make the choice that's best for you and your users. You have the right idea here to experiment, analyze, and see what works!

We already use text/image on our site, but have a special case where we want to use only text. Our account is set up to run both kinds, and I created a new ad unit set to text only. However, it displays images, and only images. You can see it here:

http://www.appolicious.com/searches/site?beta=true&term=games

I'm using Google DFP as a front end to serve the AdSense tags. The ad renders properly as a text ad within the the DFP admin.

I've searched a bunch of forums on this issue and there seem to be no answers that apply to our case, so I'd appreciate any help you can give me.

I received a notification about Hayes revenue increase through adsense. I check his site on Alexa and was thinking that he hasn't having a good traffic so far. But thinking that he was still having a chance to improve his adsense earning. So, I opt in to adsense as it was advised me to do so to increase my adsense earnings. For now, I am still waiting for their suggestions. Thanks Adsense for helping us!

I have strictly separated my ad units from the beginning so I can track them, and found over the past year that in my case image ads return roughly 200% CPM over text ads. Every site is different of course, and I've trialled different placement, unit size, image vs text, and enabled only the top-yielding combinations of all variables.

I would recommend measuring a wide range of variables over a good couple of months and then switching off the low-yielding variants. As this post says, you might be surprised and find that text ads do better for you.

This is really good information. I am still working through a number forums and posts like this one to get the best from Google Adsense.
I use Adsense myself and analyse it to death with Google Analytics but I am still not 100% convinced that it is the bells and whistles. The jury is still out on this.
