AdSense Facts & Fiction Part V: Unoriginal content

Fiction: Publishers can put ads on auto-generated pages or other copied content that was not created by them.

Fact: We don’t allow sites with auto-generated or otherwise unoriginal content to participate in the AdSense program. This is to ensure that our users are benefiting from a unique online experience and that our advertisers are partnering with useful and relevant sites.

In the past, we’ve talked about tips for maintaining an AdSense-friendly site with user-generated content (UGC). Today's topic is not only applicable to UGC sites, but also to all websites affiliated with AdSense for content.

Sometimes we come across sites that are using software to generate automated content. These sites might look like normal news sites, but the information is completely plagiarized. Scraping content and passing it off as one’s own is not only wrong, but it also happens to be a serious violation of our policies. AdSense depends on maintaining a balance between user, publisher, and advertiser experience. We strive to protect that ecosystem as much as possible by encouraging and protecting unique and relevant content.

Obviously publishers and Google are concerned with revenue generation, and when original traffic encounters quality content, it’s a match made in heaven. The best way to engage users in the long term is to engage users. Provide your opinion on the news, offer a different service, organize your site in a way so that a user is captivated and moved.

Take some time to familiarize yourself with these webmaster quality guidelines, and if you find sites within our network that are clearly violating these guidelines, feel free to report it to us.

One last thing: a quick, but well-deserved thank you to the majority of you that continue to inspire us with your great, unique, and creative content. Keep up the awesome work!

what about when you create genuine content, and it keeps copied by others on their website! like what happens in forums and other cheap sites?

Umm, so if I would own Google Search I wouldn't be allowed to use adsense on the search result pages because the whole content is scraped?

Isn't there something like scraped in a way that is helpful for the users e.g. Google News?

Dear Cecelia Choi, I am a Danish journalist covering IT news. I have a few questions:

1) What is the Google AdSense policy when it comes to syndicated content, when several medias publish the same content according to a mutual understanding?

2) How often does it happen you cancel AdSense partners because of violation of the AdSense policy?

3) What kind of violations are the most common?

Best wishes,

Filip Schwartz Kirkegaard, ComON.dk

What about aggregators? Sites that aggregate a specific type of content (i.e. job offers, real state listings, news...) coming from multiple other online sources.

That is not original content, but it is allowed to have AdSense in them, right?

What about auto generate content from our blog like on search result ?

I am very irritated by the ads that cover game reference information on Wordscrapper. I cannot move or eliminate this information to see my gaming information below it.
I hate their placement!

This is all well & good, but the complaint process could be clearer for reporting these types of auto-generated-content scam sites to Google.

On Google's form to report Adsense feedback, if people pick the option that "The site hosting or distributing my copyrighted content, without my permission", Google provides a link for making a DMCA complaint. Google doesn't log the Adsense TOS violation.

Apparently people have to click "The site violates AdSense program policies in other ways" in order to report these sites.

There should be a clear choice to report "auto-generated content" sites. For these sites, DMCA complaints are generally a waste of time.

adsense being displayed on scraper sites and google does not do anything after 3 reports: fact!

Thanks Cecelia Choi for the update, Please also let us know how to improve eCPM as most of us are facing low eCPM problem since January 2011 start

Unfortunately, this doesn't seem to actually work. Today, it's way easier to steel content (also automatically), than get it removed from a violating site. I came across auto-generated sites that run AdSense all the time, most of them violate the policies. Battling user-generated sites that steel content is even harder.

Automatic content? Sorry I understand what you mean tadak. I work with my site running as it is, without having to tengeok right-left. What I get (science) is always with tiba2. So please give me the sense that I understand what you mean, of course, so I do not break them. Thank you ....

what about job posting sites???

I've been looking at migrating a site between servers and noted that if you setup the redirects from old to new incorrectly then your site might get flagged as unorigional content. As mentioned in the duplicate content guidelines one of the key things is to use a RedirectPermanent flag on the old site.

Tony, unfortunately the rules for adsense are not the same as the rules google apply to themselves. For example if I emailed you about cigars then gmail would add in useful adverts for humidors, cigar cutters, smoking jackets etc. However if I published a website about cigars then that would fail the terms and conditions and get no adverts at all. Is this fair, no. Is this clearly documented, yes.

mvandemar said...

Actually, Cecelia, you should probably clarify that those rules only apply to normal AdSense publishers. Premium publishers, such as, for instance, Mahalo.com, appear to be allowed to post ads on pages with little to no original content just fine. Isn't this correct?

Jenhuei said...

If this is true and effective immediately, please update this TOS as well because I think many adsense publisher following this guideline where they didnt mention about Duplicated content at all:

If someone copies me, how does Google know who copied whom?

Because if they can't tell, does that mean I have to go around hunting for plagiarist?

mohd saidi said...

Why now this rule started after i created a lot of copied content to publish at my blog? Why not at the beginning? This will effect all my blog content and also my adsense account. Supposed this rule publish at the adsense TOS earlier. I think this is not fair.

hope adsense blocks all those hot and sexy picture posting websites too .. !

If you publish your original content on your web site, and then someone else coy and paste is to their web site.

How can you prove whose content is?
How can you prove that you wrote it first and claim it?

I mean how can we really be protected, in my spanish site I'm posting all my original poems and stories:

http://www.historiasdemaria.com

And I would really like to know how to get protected from those "content stealers"?

This makes me laugh ... are you kidding??

The biggest scraper websites on internet like www.fanpop.com, www.flash-screen.com, www.graphicshunt.com and www.blingcheese.com are still with Google ads and they still stealing and scraping everything from medium and small websites with original content ! They never got banned for violations TOS of Google and Google Adsense... that's hypocritical.

Even bigger problem is wallpapersonweb.com which literally hotlinking and stealing someones images for a months and they still running a google ads ??!!

Aaand ... the biggest joke is this website : http://www.wallconvert.com/
They are actually source ( script ) for most of hotlinking scraper websites and they HAVE Google ads.

C'mon ... How about telling us truth without "good" wishes ???

I sense high level of hypocrisy here, anyone else ?

Dear Ms. Cecelia Choi , I would like to get answers on my questions if you have such a concerns about unoriginal content . I bet everyone those .

Sincerely,
Hektor

Are there any statistics about original content in the web content?

I have no statistics, but I believe that original content represents small portion of the web content. may be less than 20%. If Google applies the new rule strictly AND honestly(I personally know very big sites that violate the adsense policy and still show Google ads),then they will lose XXX% of the publishers. XXX is not 10% or 20% ... I am sure it is higher than that. This is good for the other competitors.
Anyway, with the very low eCPM in the last months Google is becoming less attractive for publishers.

GOOGLE YOU ARE NOT ALONE :)

Hi everyone!

Thanks for the great questions, comments, and lively discussion.

If you believe that a website monetized with AdSense is distributing your copyrighted content, you can file a notice of infringement through our online form (https://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/request.py?contact_type=dmca_complaint), which will be handled accordingly by our legal team. In appropriate circumstances, we will take action against publishers that are repeat infringers.

We also recommend you take a look at this post on our DMCA process for more information: http://adsense.blogspot.com/2009/02/my-content-your-content-other-peoples.html and join the conversation in our Help Forum to discuss additional policy questions or concerns: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/AdSense/label?lid=54d50ee038a93e84&hl=en

Hi folks!

So you've discovered that this is not a perfect world. Welcome to planet earth!

The time spent here b****ing about this one and that one could be better spent producing your own original content, well written, spelled correctly and with good keywords. That will get you lots of traffic and Google will send you a nice cheque every month.

It's not so clear about auto-generated, example I have site generated it's content by user submitting their programs on freewarelists dot com, is this break the rules or not? since I didn't generate it I feel it's not break the rules, BUT the fact there is words "We don’t allow sites with auto-generated" I fell confused now!! just want to make it clear I don't want to break the rules, please answer my question.

Ok great, this is all well in good. My sites have original content writtnen by me.
But what about content that I get from another blog that I find interesting and post on my site with credit and backlink to the original author. Is that "scraped content" too? Is ok to mix "syndicated content" along with my own content?

I do think that google is trying to minimize the number of publishers and here by an evidence happened to me personally...

I was having 3 blogs in an old account "h.ezzat75@gmail.com" and i found after a period that my payee name has small spelling error so i tried to change but surprised that google company refuse this action for my country EGYPT, !!!!don't know why...Any way I searched a lot till i find your procedures that told me to cancel my old adsense account and create new one, and so i did so and then i found that i must do the new adsense account with new gmail account so i creted my current account "hmemay75@gmail.com" BUT I WAS SURPRIZED THAT GOOGLE REFUSED MY ACCOUNT "APPLICATION" INCLUDING MY PREVIOUSLY APPROVED BLOGS ????!!!!!!! HOW COME.... I DON'T KNOW

aNY WAY I CREATED NEW BLOGS AND TILL NOW REFUSALS WITHOUT ACCURATE REASONS EXCEPT THE NON-HUMAN REPLIES """"PAGE TYPE""""" I WONDER WHAT SHALL I DOOOOOO?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THANKS IN ADVANCE
