Attracting new brand advertisers to your site
Thursday, March 04, 2010 | 8:54:00 AM
We’re constantly focused on bringing new advertisers and more advertising spend to AdSense sites. One way to do so is to make it easier for brand advertisers to reach their goals on AdSense sites. Brand advertisers are focused on raising brand awareness and driving engagement, typically with display ads, for a product or service a person may buy in the future. Brand advertisers differ from direct response advertisers, who typically look for clicks and conversions from the campaigns they run on your site.
For example, an advertiser selling DVDs online may want users to click through and make purchases, while a brand advertiser for an upcoming summer blockbuster may want to generate awareness among users. Because of their campaign goals, brand advertisers tend to be more selective about the sites their ads run on, as well as where on the page their ads appear. We want to help these new advertisers compete for the portions of your ad space that are most attractive to them so that we can increase your earnings over time.
With that in mind, we're launching a new beta advertiser feature that we believe will help accomplish this goal. The new feature enables brand advertisers to target their ads to ad units that are immediately visible when a page is loaded -- in other words, the portions of the page a user can see without needing to scroll down. The ads that are immediately visible are called 'above the fold'; those that require a user to scroll down in order to be seen are called 'below the fold.'
In order to determine which ads are above and below the fold, we've implemented a statistically-driven model. The model takes into account various user experiences and situations, including different web browsers, monitor sizes, and screen resolutions, and only considers ads above the fold if they are fully on-screen when the browser window loads.
If you've placed your ad units above the fold, advertisers using this feature will now be able to reach your site in a new way. If you haven't, placing new ad units above the fold will enable them to do so. We believe this feature will help attract new brand campaigns to AdSense sites, bringing more revenue to publishers over time.

Will there be a reporting option for publishers so we can verify that adverts we think are above the fold are indeed deemed as such by the Google statistical data?
That would enable us to modify our websites if necessary to boost the reliability of ad units being classed as OTF.

I'm assuming you mean we will be paid by impressions and not on clicks. This is a welcomed addition to adsense. If it is implemented correctly it was a GREAT IDEA!

Actually, I really like the idea of targetting below the fold as it would mean that people actually read/scanned the content before leaving. Is that an option?

Would love to have the same advertisers every time via Google, so my current advertisers can use Google instead I have to deal each of them separate, each time again as their advertising period ends.

Nice idea, I have 2 units above the fold, but could it be possible within the rules, that when visitor clicks any Ad, it open in a new window so the visitor do not have to leave our blog without actually 'visiting' it!?

I'm a freelance writer who now, after reading these comments, have NO CLUE as to why I'm here. I DO have a website though and am getting another one shortly; so maybe this will somehow help.

As Rod says, will these new ads raising brand awareness be paid on click or impression?
Raising awareness of a brand is surely a matter of keep seeing the name rather than necessarily asking people to visit a website.

While I am a fan of this blog, will the moderators READ the comments and reply to them?
You may also want to clean up the bad spam as well (see above). Just a thought.

If I have a full-sized skyscraper OTF it may not entirely fit on small displays when the browser takes up so many toolbar lines. Would I be better off with a smaller ad?
(I don't think anyone actually reads these posts so - a cry in the wilderness..).

Rod Ferris, good luck with that. I think this whole blog might be created and 'moderated' by a robot.

Hey, Great post!
In this day and age taking advantage of SEO and social network websites as effective marketing tools for your business is essential! Most businesses don’t fully understand the capabilities of these tools to improve traffic and exposure! I was searching for a company to ship one of my vehicles overseas and ran into Auto Shipping Network; I was amazed at how they implemented these tools so well into their company website. Check it out for yourselves at http://www.autoshippingnetwork.com/ .

Hi everyone,
We appreciate all your comments and wanted to address some of the questions you had.
- At this time there is no reporting functionality for publishers to verify the performance of above the fold ads
- Most advertisers focused on brand awareness pay on impressions. However at anytime we will display the highest paying ad as determined by our auction, whether that's a click based on impression based ad
- Advertisers with these goals are interested in showing their ads above the fold so at this time we're not considering below the fold targeting
- The behavior of ads placed above the fold are no different to that of any other ad on your page
- When trying to figure out which ad unit performs the best for your site, we recommend trying out different ad units in a placement and monitoring the performance for a few days
Please let us know if you have any other questions on this feature.
Thanks,
Dia

Am I stupid or what. But how do I create an ad to show "above the fold" on my website??? This is why it takes me so long to get going on a Google launch or product rollout because it never is explained very well with easy to follow "123 go!" directions. It's always cloudy to understand and implement and time consuming to figure out.

Brand ads do not result in click in the first place. They are there for brand awareness and people do not easily click on them. That way the brand advertiser gets good free advertising on top spots. The other concern is that if the ad is above the fold and if the visitor actually clicks the ad, that means that you visitor leaves your site even before he read your content because Google refuse to let clicks open in a new window.

I cannot find anything on this thread where Asense say quite clearly that we will be paid by impression. I am paid by click. So how will brand advertisers benefit me if the ad is off topic and no one clicks the ad? Google gets paid but not me?
Please enlighten me.

I am the owner of a unique webmagazine/advertiser called Netsaga.is, www.netsaga.is and I have fans from all over the world, but there is one catch: I need more traffic!
The story behind Netsaga:
I am a physically handicapped person. Once my job was to find jobs for other disables, but when I became unemployed myself I soon became very bored but had the brilliant idea of opening a website for my stories and articles and other's hobbywriters who are many, handicapped and those who are with such a burden on their shoulders.
As you are able so see Netsaga has been quite popular and has received a lot of emails with new stories, poems and articles.
And the music is fantastic and has a lot of fans.
But I want the writers to get a fair share of income earned from the ads and therefore I would like you to give me a hand in the promoting of Netsaga.
I am waiting for a positive reply.

Something I've been unable to find is instructions for creating a link to help visitors to my site quickly setup an adwords account and target ads to my site.
I'd really like to be able to point people who are interested in advertising on my site to an AdWords landing page that would help them target ads towards my site without getting lost. Frequently I get requests from people interested in advertising on my site, but I am not set up to handle my own ad sales, a Google link could help convert these interested parties.
