The medium and large rectangle square off

When talking about optimization here on Inside AdSense, we frequently encourage readers to use the 300x250 medium rectangle. But we've also talked about how bigger ad units tend to perform well, so a few publishers have asked us, "Should we be using the 300x250 medium rectangle or the bigger 336x280 large rectangle?"

We took this question to our Optimization Team, who gave us insight into the strengths of each ad format:
  • The 300x250 medium rectangle is a widely supported format that advertisers often use when designing their branding and rich media campaigns. Using this ad format and opting in to both text and image ads may generate more placement targeting opportunities, which will help drive up competition for your ad space and should lead to higher earnings over time.

  • The 336x280 large rectangle tends to have a higher clickthrough rate due to its larger size. It often performs well on text-heavy pages where it's integrated into the content.
Our optimization specialists noted that performance of these two ad formats can vary from site to site, so they can't definitively say that all publishers should always use one format over the other. Just like with all other customization options, they recommend experimenting with each ad format for 3-4 weeks and measuring performance using custom channels.

What's your opinion? Feel free to leave us a comment and let us know how the medium and large rectangles have performed for you.

Get real.. At this moment in time, your publishers all over the world need and deserve an official statement about the PIP saga. the cause of delay and how and when they will be paid..

No one at this stage of month is interested in medium vs large rectangle performance debate....

It is very interesting news about the size (300x250) and (336x280) will give good results for us.

Hi, quick question.

Am I allowed to show adsense on pages where I'm showing google news feeds?

I think this should be possible as they're both from the same company?

Just want to make sure.

Thanks.

Why does the medium rectangle (300x250) ads always display small font size even if I choose large font in settings?

I had applied
1. 120x600 (image)
2. 300x250 (image)
3. 336x280 (image)

And many times I have seen similar advt. running at 120x600 And 300x250 within the same post.

And many times I have seen similar advt. running at 120x600, 300x250 And 336x280 within the same post.

Same advt. twice even thrice which I find not interesting And I am sure noone will find it interesting.

Now after reading your blog post I have changed 300x250 into text and image advt.

Lets see the change.
And lets see whether I see again similar advt. within 120x600 (image) And 336x280 (image).

Thanking you for the post.

For me, 336x280 isn't large enough. I wish you had something larger. Maybe 600x300. The space I'm using right now has a width of 688, so I could use an ad as wide as 688.

I also wish you had an ad size that was 120x60. I have space for that next to my web site logo banner.

While I'm talking about improvements, how about allowing us to get paid if we have made at least 50 dollars?

I find that size doesnt matter all that much. Actually, my best results come from ads that are the most relevant, or are pictures.

Either way, I find my clicks are way down from the first few years of blogging with google. Why would this be? Per 1000 hits, I get perhaps 5 clicks. Is that normal? My income has dropped drastically.

In my case 336x280 ( image and text ) performs the best... 250x300 is about 30% less effective on my site.

"and should lead to higher earnings over time" a common claim by you Google AdSense people and it makes me laugh every time, since your suggestions do not always lead to "higher earnings over time," otherwise your advertisers would be very unhappy campers.

AA said...

I have a feeling that clicks are down because people have the adsense look ingrained in their brains and are now avoiding it.

Once a page loads, I can easily tell which content are ads, and I will subconsciously ignore it. I'm sure there are now millions more who think like this, when they didn't a couple years ago. Mainly because EVERY site in the world has adsense on it.

80% of my earnings comes from 336x280 only, then comes 160x600 and link unit...so you can see i m dependent upon the above one only. :)

Why don't you add a few different format? You know web design is improving day by day and i think web site owners who is participated in Adsense need more alternative ad formats.

Lorenzo said...

It would be great if I could find out how you select the ad format size these days, it used to be so easy but now I have absolutely no idea where these settings have disappeared to.

pagalan.jerome said...

i guessed we have to switch on to an ad format rectangle which has greater chance be clicked.. that's what we need right?

tozcal2009 said...

All depends very much on the width of a homepage or blog template if this Adsense format size will look good.

Why?

Just figure a huge sofa chair placed right at the entrance of a tiny lobby. That's as overpowering as putting a huge Adsense square above the fold.
I've tried it and was horrified.

Now, I wonder if it would have a less intrusive guerilla like appearance in the middle of large text.
May be, only my own taste for attractive advertising plays such a role here.

Not that I didn't make Adsense placing mistakes in my homepage, which still need to be corrected...

Why is ADSENSE advertising on MY hubpages when they've not even reviewed my app yet. Ya know what....until you decide I'm worthy of your ads...then keep them out of my posts. Period. end of story. I have an incredibly high rating as a writer and ALL of my Hubs are huge ratings as well. Monopolize on some other schmuck before coming to me if you are not going to pay me for the clicks. Amazon doesn't do that....why do you???????????
