Site maintenance on Saturday, August 8

Our engineers will be performing routine site maintenance this Saturday from 10am to 2pm PDT. Although you won't be able to access your AdSense or Ad Manager accounts during this time, your clicks, impressions, and earnings will continue to be recorded as normal. In addition, ad serving and ad targeting on your pages won't be affected.
For our international readers, here's the maintenance start time converted for a few cities around the world:
London - 6pm Saturday
Athens - 8pm Saturday
Mumbai - 10:30pm Saturday
Kuala Lumpur - 1am Sunday
Melbourne - 3am Sunday

Every time I read this I always wonder, what exactly will the engineers be doing in these few hours of maintenance? Perhaps it's interesting to shed some light on that?

Michael Comeau - If you'd like to receive updates like this via email, be sure to subscribe to the blog :)
Ellithy - Changes in your eCPM are unrelated to site maintenance periods. If you're seeing fluctuations in your eCPM, you might find our 2-part series on revenue fluctuations helpful in understanding and pinpointing the cause(s). (Read Part I and Part II.)
Robert - I encourage you to read this previous blog post, written by one of our engineers, to learn more about what goes on during these maintenance periods.

@Arlene, Thanks I apparently missed that post. Software updates and cheesy 80's songs? Lol, Good to know what it's about.

The best that I can figure out why the stats are sluggish after this maintenance period for hours after is that there are a lot of numbers to be crunched and since reporting is stopped for that period, shouldn't we all just assume by now it's just the servers catching up on all the stat crunching?
I mean this isn't the first rodeo where we've gotten a notice about maintenance and stats are down, and then seen our stats recover to normal by the end of the day. You couldn't imagine how much data needs to be crunched when things are restarted. I'm amazed that it seems to recover to normal reporting in less than a day.
I do applaud Google for scheduling it like they do (on Saturday's) and giving us all plenty of notice during the week of the upcoming stat reporting downtime.
Google could be adding more servers, installing the latest version of software (including security updates), swapping out bad hard drives and equipment for new ones, or even running weekly tests of their equipment to make sure everything is running ok.
Whatever they are doing I'm just glad that it gets done and as usual there are no problems afterwords.
