Sunsetting video units feature

As you may know, we frequently review our products and features to ensure their effectiveness. After reviewing our AdSense video units feature, which allows you to show YouTube content and ads on your pages, we've found that it hasn't had the impact we had hoped for. As a result, we've decided to retire this feature at the end of April so we can focus our resources on other opportunities to help publishers earn from their sites.

If you'd still like to display video content from YouTube, you can do so through YouTube.com directly. Visit any specific video page and look for the code in the 'Embed' box, or sign in to your YouTube account to create a playlist. In addition, please note that this change won't affect the availability of other video-related ads options -- video ads may appear in your AdSense for content ad units if you've opted into image ads, and AdSense for video is still accepting applications from eligible publishers who produce video content.

Starting today, the option to sign up for video units is no longer available to new publishers. If you're currently displaying video units, we recommend that you start removing the video unit code from your pages as soon as possible so you can optimize your available ad space in advance. Please be assured that any earnings you've generated from video units in the past will still be credited to your AdSense account.

Once video units are retired at the end of April, any remaining Leaderboard or Skyscraper video units on your pages will direct users to YouTube.com, while other video unit sizes will automatically be changed to standard embedded YouTube players. These standard video players will display top YouTube videos, but you won't generate earnings from them once this change occurs. If you have less than three ad units on your page, you may prefer to replace your video unit with a regular ad unit.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we continue to develop our products.

Is this change going to affect YouTube partner earnings at all? I believe the Adsense for Content Host is due to video units on other sites, can someone clarify?

This is ridiculous, keep the video units for all the youtube video based publishers! We like the video units and thought they were working great.

Though I expect Google adsense team to start with an extra ad unit for the same :)

Does this have anything to do with me making 8-10% off my Adsense for Content? For the last two days, I see my content is making good money but I am not.

What's the dilly, guys? And I'm just curious, BTW.

failure of the video units happened because of googles lack of guidance on how to use them..and for the few who figured it out on there own like me did make some money :(

I look forward to new ways to earn

After failing to get any proper reply from Google, I have no option but to post my problem through a comment here. A false DMCA was filed against my website. I faxed the counter notification to Google with the proper legal format about 7 times but Google fails to reply me. Why does Google protects big corporates and crushes innocent small businesses?

Misterduncan said...

This is the least of my problems. My total and host earnings have been changed. I'm suddenly earning a small fraction of my total. This cannot be right. It seems to be all going downhill...and all these changes are made with no notification. Not what I expected from Google.

Hello again, I stated on my first comment to this post that I will miss the video units feature... I would like to also add that I have just recently analyzed my Adsense stats and found out that the Video Units alone account for 16% of my total earnings. This may not seem like a lot to some but it means so much to me. Is there any way for the Video Units feature to continue? Disabling this feature will have a very negative affect on my earnings.

Awaiting your response,

hi

may i have a suggestion concerning adsense ads in youtube-videos?

when i saw the last experience that showed the adsense ads at the bottom of the video on youtube , i was very sure (100%) that this feature will fail and will not have success since it was very distracting , confusing and disabling the watcher from concentrating and watching the video clearly ,this what will happen normally if something is moving and playing at the bottom of the video.

as you know , no one of us wants nor can watch 2 things at the same time (even if we have 2 eyes , lol ) , because we want to focus on what we watch during the show, that means one showing thing only.

i suggest that the ads of adsense may appear at the end of the video but not during the video-show at the bottom of the video as it was during your last experience.

for example , if we have a 2 minutes video , we can add an extra 10 seconds adsense ad unit at the end of the video ,so as a result we will have a video with 2 minutes and 10 seconds complete whole durations {2:10}.

that means during the first 2 minutes the visitors will see only the video contents then in the last 10 seconds the visitors will see only the adsense ads.

i am sure (100%) this is extremely succesfull since the visitors may not be distracting by watching ads during video play , however they will enjoy watching ads at the end of the video as same as it happens when the adsense ads appear at the end of the written post in Blogger or the other websites.

best regards :)

Google, please remove the vido (or modify it) which is now giving stale instructions for using a feature that you cancelled a month ago.

That video is on this oage:

The YouTube video combined with adsense was the best idea that any of the major click based advertiser had come up with in the last two years. It is truly a shame that Google was not willing to put more effort and manpower into supporting its new creation. I could tell early on into this process that their main issue was going to be categorizing and policing the videos that were generated (ie keeping profanity or nudity from accidentally showing up on a site geared towards an under 18 year old audience). I myself had several videos show up that had nothing to do with the keywords that I was focusing on and had no control over this. On my Adwords campaign, I have access to exclude specific (competitor) sites, so why couldn't that be incorporated into this format? I feel that they allowed the individuals who created the videos to be to loose with the keywords about what the video contained. I think they could've saved themselves a lot of time by allowing users to choose which videos show up on their site. Google could still control the advertising that shows up based on the content of the site like they do for standard PPC and the site owner would be responsible for ensuring the video is suitable for their website.

I was very impressed with the traffic that was being generated on both sides of my Google campaigns (Adwords CPC and Adsense PPC)

Hopefully the Managers and Board members at Google realize what a mistake it is to scrap what could be a tremendously lucrative product.

I would also like to mention that when you plan on making a change of this magnitude, that you give enough warning to your customers to allow them to make the necessary changes to their websites before you discontinue a program. To give that short of a warning was simply bad business.

I've always been a huge fan of Google and marveled at the way they have revolutionized the advertising industry, but in this case it appears that even almighty Google makes mistakes.

Adsense for video failed because it was too limited. Here's a realistic idea. Instead of limiting to the channels implemented before expand the program to allow Adsense publishers to earn from any video they select on You Tube and you would see greater exposure, increased impressions, and more advertisers using the system. That's the name of the game, they are going for lack of advertiser interest so give advertisers something to be interested in. Any Video at Any time ads.

The failure of Video ads is perhaps lack of ROI -- pushing out video (vs. text/image ads) is very expensive. But it was a good idea to leverage the YouTube content, which is very expensive to maintain as is (bandwidth, storage, processing/CPU, electricity). So, perhaps the infrastrucutre to maintain Video ads themselves was poorly implemented vs. the return on infrastructure or content support? Or perhaps there were other legal issues we are not aware of?

Speculations -- I bet video ads will return; it is logical.

I am glad that I did not work much on them since with revver not paying people and their vids not working since the buy out of revver from liveuniverse it put too much work for me anyway.
I do plan to keep my eyes out if they do the ad units in videos again and if it goes well for awhile. I think so far of any and all affiliate programs online google is by far the best and only that I trust as much to work on so many sites with.
I bought an entire site MicrosoftVideos.com just for ads in videos but, as I think of it ads in them defeat the purpose of watching them online anyway. I guess it was fate but, sad since I have no way but a few to get real income on ads now.

I was making great money off the video adsense for from multiple sites. This has really affected the money I make with adsense. I don't get how Google is saying the video adsense didn't work to their expectations. It sure was working to my expectations.

I hope they plan to somehow still populate video ads in the image ads so I could still make the same if not more money off of adsense.

The last few of you need to realise that Google are not talking about ads within youtube videos, they are talking about Google Adsense Video Units, which were embedable youtube videos which featured ads so webmasters could earn from them on their own sites. This was ended in April 09. The ads within Youtube videos are here to stay.

www.nybangla.com said...

This is unexpected. AdSence Video Units was the best for advertiser and the website owner.
