When we notice a spike in readers who are interested in a specific topic, we like to address it as soon as we can. There's been some interest in filtering ads from publisher pages, so here's a quick refresher on the filtering tools we offer:
Competitive Ad Filter
You can restrict contextually-targeted and placement-targeted ads from appearing on your pages by adding the URL of each ad to your Competitive Ad Filter. After logging in to your account, click the AdSense Setup tab and visit the 'Competitive Ad Filter' page. You can also find full instructions and tips for entering in specific URLs in our Help Center. To determine the URL of an ad, try the AdSense Preview Tool or follow these steps. Please keep in mind that it may take several hours for the filter to take effect.
Ad Review Center
The Ad Review Center gives you additional control over the placement-targeted ads that may appear on your pages. Using the Ad Review Center, you can review specific ad groups and advertisers before they appear on your pages, and also block ads by type. You'll need to opt in to the Ad Review Center at the top of your Competitive Ad Filter page, and then you can begin reviewing ads.

You noticed a spike in readers interested in a certain topic did you?
You've broken trust with your publishers over this prop 8 ad issue and although Google gave 140k to the vote no on prop 8 I'm betting you've taken in millions in ad revenue for the vote yes on prop 8.
It's nice to see we are held to exacting rules as publishers and Google breaks those very rules.
Sites displaying Google ads may not include Violent content, racial intolerance, or advocacy against any individual, group, or organization.
You also need to allow the option to post using name and URL...not all of us use the blogger platform!

seriously. noticed a spike?
way to get on the news by 'donating' money to no on 8...you probably already had the yes on 8 money set up.
you've completely broken my trust, and I (as well as many others) are now shopping for another company to provide advertisements.
terrible move google. fire whoever made that choice.

This is pretty appalling. Is there a way in adsense to see what ads have been run on my blog? I'm going to suspend adsense from my site until Google gets their crap together.

My goodness, there is more on the world than actually this prop 8. Just in case you did not know - there is also an election going on in that country, and that produces unwanted ads as well.
And even more, this is a topic which goes far beyond just some politics (assuming that this is the case) - there is a need to be able to go down on a more contextual level.
You want disgusting? Try to have a website about how to make a Baby Diaper Cake and see the results come in for incontinence. Blocking urls is not enough as there are so many of them ...
But, of course as usual with anything with a political touch, my (contextual to this blog) comment will be spilled out with gazillions of political comments.
Hint: There is more in the world which google has to work with than just the US.

How can you run these Yes on Prop 8 ads?
What about all the sites who don't even know what Prop 8 is? All the bloggers who don't live in California or the US? They're unwittingly running these ads FOR discrimination.

(IFB never had ads, though I have other blogs and have taken my ads down..)
Honestly, I don't know what to say... I feel betrayed... that my blog can be used as a vehicle for right-wing religious discrimination. I have always believed in equality for all people, and this really sickens me.
I may not put my ads up again.

I'm with the others. I'd like some feedback from Google on two issues here:
* How did ads that weren't relevant to content get through in the first place?
* Can we get a mechanism of blocking that's real-time? (I found one. I shut off Google Ads.)
To me, it was a huge shock that on my music tech site, we were suddenly telling some of our readers that their partnerships threatened kids. Come on.
If this was an abuse by the advertiser, or a violation of Google's policies in some way, I'd sure like to hear more. I'm not going to immediately rail against Google, but I do hope you guys can give us some more feedback, and that you realize timing is critical. We need some explanation from AdSense, and we need tools as publishers that respond in real-time, because that's what online publishing is about.

To be honest, I don't care if the ads showing up are for or against any proposition, candidate, amendment, or other political item. If Google are going to allow political ads, then they need to provide a universal filter for political ads.
I'm not going to go in to my own political views here, and I don't on my blog either. My blog is supposed to be 100% apolitical. Google, by not providing me with the ability to opt out of any and all political advertising, are threatening my readership numbers by potentially offending people.
In short, I will discontinue the use of AdSense until such time as Google provide me with the ability to block any and all politcal ads.

This is appalling! People TRUST Google AdSense to create ads based on the content of the sites - by searching the keywords. We set up AdSense and let it go. So, you create these ads for a hugely divisive and discriminatory issue and don't tell anyone? You let them go out to people's sites who are morally opposed to such hate? Then, when people ask for answers you give them a multi-step process for running additional filters?
You are ridiculous. Clean up your act. Step up and apologize. Your own company has a "No on 8" policy, why would you let this happen?

Because of this issue, I've permanently block Google's Ad Sense domain servers through my hosts file, which prevents my computer from being able to reach the server when a site contains an adsense ad (instead it directs that link to your own computer, where there's no page to load)
Here are instructions for blocking AdSense in Windows.
This is not for the feint of heart and will block all AdSense everywhere. I wounld't have done this because I know a lot of people making a living with AdSense, but if you help someone try and take away my Constitutional rights with lies then you don't get my business.

stop whining. this is no different than allowing comments on a blog. you have to monitor anything that any other entity it posting to your site and remove it if you dont like it. why would adsense be different? google provides a way to remove ads you dont like, just like a blog allows you to remove comments you dont like. google is just making the tools. if you got "yes on 8" ads on your site and didnt remove them its becuase YOU WERE LAZY or tuned-out to the ads that were appearing on your site.
take some responsibility for whats on your own site, people.

Doesn't matter what my political views are, my site does/did not discuss politics (well on the above post it now does) and yet, it ran a political ad that potentially could cost me some customers and clients. Maybe it was a spamer, maybe not. There should have been a political filter in place! Google you violated #6 of your Ten Things Philosophy: you did evil.

Well I would like to say one thing: whether or not I agree with the political ad displayed on my site, I still don't want the ad on my site! Personally, I voted yes on 8, believe than gays can have their own marriage like title if they want, and that traditional marriage shouldn't be changed. However, I don't want political ads, for or against my views, displayed on my site, period. If political ads are going to be put out, there should be an option allowing one to opt out. I should NOT have constantly monitor my ads all day and block individual ads by filtering domain names! That's just my two cents, take it or leave.

Google better had speak up about this tremendous fail on their part.

We're still waiting for some sort of response as to how it works that Sergey donates money to battle Prop 8 while AdSense spams your customers' sites with yes on 8 ads... is it simply sheer greed?
My site's content has nothing to do with intolerance, bigotry, hatred or eliminating civil rights, so the ads weren't placed there via content matching.
When we have no say in what appears on our own sites, and no ability to filter out messages we find offensive, Google AdSense is holding us hostage via our own sites, and that just ain't good business, dontchaknow.
You all have a lot of explaining to do, yet all we are hearing is silence coming from your quarters. Is all that bigot money blinding you to the need to perform basic customer service?
No more form letters, please, I've received enough. You know how to contact me, I'd like a personal response this time. Until then, my site has no AdSense, either.

I don't even intend to put Google on the defensive, but what exactly does it take to get some sort of explanation? Even as much as how the contextual placements had political ads that were geo-targeted but not keyword specific?
I haven't even seen an *attempt* at an explanation, beyond this cut-and-paste job.

what a sad joke this has turned out to be. i'm finding alternatives to all the google services i used to use, and i am counseling everyone i know, and i know a lot of people on the web, to find alternatives to google now that they have gone evil. it's pretty clear that they have discarded their "Don't be evil" mantra, cozied up to the bigots, took their money, and decided to clam up and hope this would all blow over. Well, guess what, we won't forget, and we won't forgive, either.
You used and abused us, and violated our trust and goodwill, and will never see a penny of *my* money ever again. Sure you can provide me with free services and work your butts off, but I'm gonna block all your ads and cut off your revenue streams. I tried to use the Ad Filter to keep competitive ads from showing on the site I was building.
It was impossible! I keep adding URL after URL and I downloaded that tool to help too.
Then after all this frustration, I decided it wasn't worth all that work and the client decided he didn't want those ads popping up for his competition. So I deleted it all.
The next day I get told my acct is suspended for invalid clicks. I didn't even realize I'd gotten any registered clicks, I was too busy trying to get the competition ads from showing up.
I could care less if they kept the cash I generated - but suspending my acct. for this?
After reading these comments I think I will find other advertising for my site. I think I'm going to go check out Yahoo - I've always prefered them anyway.
I can't believe how arrogant and corrupt google has become. So not only am I taking my business elsewhere, but that's goes for my entire company too. Keep it up Google and soon you won't have any publishers left.

I find this ad blocking cumbersome and error prone. Some of the errors include accidentally clicking the ad while gathering information.
I believe that this could be simplified by using a proxy while the publisher is logged in. This proxy could annotate the ad with a yes/no, thumbs up/down or other rating link which would record the blocking without the hand parsing or a separate web form.
Given a web service interface, this cold be developed by users using greasemonkey or similar technology.
Thanks,
-jak

In my adsense for feeds I've noticed and gotten comments that ads for Ann Coulter have shown up. There are a couple of points that are obvious to me:
1. Nobody who reads my blogs is going to be clicking on Ann Coulter links. In fact they are more likely to be insulted.
2. If nobody's going to click there's no point in me running them.
3. I started trying to figure out how to block the ads, but its taking hours of my time. Google is providing almost no help in this, except to continually warn me not to click on my ads to find out the urls to block. Thanks Google.
4. I'm a small site, I have gotten just a few clicks anyway, I feel like I'm just providing free advertising to Ann Coulter. That really gets to me.
This is a huge issue really. I've already cut way back on adsense usage preferring to have more control over my ads and what I think people would click on. Adsense doesn't give me that control.
In fact, again my sites are small, but I feel like I'm getting either total loser ads or ads that aren't even intended to be clicked on. They definitely make my site and feeds worse.
