Lucy's final tips for Friday newbies

As the summer draws to a close, it is with a heavy heart that I bring you our last Newbie Friday post. I hope you've enjoyed our words of wisdom over the past few months and have found the information useful. Our team will continue to update this blog with the most up-to-date AdSense news and information, so please don't let this be goodbye. If you missed part of the series or want to re-read specific posts, just visit our Newbie label at any time and look for our summer-themed logo. So, from one oldie to many newbies, I'll close out this season with a few final tips for our new publishers.

Go wide and get rich (media)
If you've just recently started with AdSense, there are two format-related tips I would instantly recommend. The first is to enable both text and image ads, which will increase competition among ads to appear in your ad units and may result in higher CPMs. Second, use some of our wider units, such as the 160x600 wide skyscraper, the 300x250 medium rectangle, or the 728x90 leaderboard. There are more rich media (image, flash, video and gadget) ads available in wider ad formats, and wider ad units are the preferred formats for advertisers looking to target your site. Again, increased competition or your ad space will help you maximise your earnings potential.

Use channels
Channels are powerful reporting tools, sometimes overlooked by new publishers. They allow you to view the AdSense performance of a site, a specific page, or even a specific ad unit, which can help you see where your ads are performing best. You can name these channels, give them descriptions, and then define them as ad placements so that they are visible to AdWords advertisers.

The secret
As top AdSense earners will tell you, when it comes to earning with AdSense, the most important thing is a policy-compliant site with good-quality, original content. Such sites attract users, relevant ads and, ultimately, revenue.

Finally, we constantly maintain online resources like our AdSense Help Forum, Newbie Central, and our Known Issues page to share useful information with you. We hope you'll use them to make the most of AdSense.

Great tips, especially about using the wider unit.

Very good tips. I use the 728x90 leaderboard. I might have to try the 160x600 & see how it works.

Hi, great tips! Thanks, but i want to know if i am breaking any policies if the edge of my ads just slightly overshoots my page. I ask because am real confused on this. And i cant paste my site link here so you see it first-hand since you discourage pasting of site links here. Please advise so i don't break any rules. Thanks. Tony (Nigeria)

yes, wider is good.
anyway, why don't you guys create a large ad format?

like: 336 x 600 px? or even wider like 468 x 600 px?

That will increase our CTR a lot.

@all readers:
Come on guys, let's suggest this ad format to GOogle Adsense Team.

I have done it.

URL channels appear to be broken if you are using adsense on blogspot blogs.

You can find discussion of this problem at the Adsense Help Group. The thread contains a number of links around the web pointing out the problem.

If you try to make a URL Channel in blogspot (and some say that even just trying to add Adsense to a new blogspot blog) you get an error stating that the URL cannot contain a Google host.

As Lucy says in this post:

They allow you to view the AdSense performance of a site, a specific page, or even a specific ad unit, which can help you see where your ads are performing best.

I have always used URL channels on my blogspot blogs to track the effectiveness of specific posts. That's why I am sure this is just a mixup, but it is confusing.

Can someone shed some more light on the problem and possibly a fix?

amazing.

Hi Jim and Gaurav,

Thanks for noting this issue - our engineers are currently working to resolve it. One of our AdSensePros has recently posted a workaround for new signups on our Help Forum, and she'll provide any updates on the issue there.

The problem is that we only keep getting tips and no money .. if this Adsense require so much optimization then what is google for ??
Better I get some corporates and put their ads.

Google is too tight fisted to give out money for page impressions and its a known fact that very few click on Adlinks the kinda boring links and unpopular brands we get here

Why is it so hard to ask for Google's help? What kind of service do you have here? Sorry I'm frustrated and nobody in Google wants to help!!!

Can anyone help me? My ads are TOTALLY IRRELEVANT to my page content. After a month, they still have nothing at all to do with my site. Help would be appreciated!

looks like I'm not alone. :-) I apologize, but like those who have come before me, adSense isn't working and there's no explanation as to why. There's also nowhere to ask questions. My account won't log into the Forum. When signing up, it says my email address is already used, but when I try to log in, it says I don't have an account. I have a number of websites I'd like to use adsense on, which I created for the express purpose for using adsense. My email address is Ian . C . Rae @ gmail . com. Thanks! Nice blog post btw!

Hey guys (and gals)I am frustrated too.I recently applied for an Adsense account but have not gotten a response. Everytime I try to login to my account it says it is under review and I should receive an email in a week but I still have not heard. I tried to email Google but it did not have that particular option under subject. When I pick any subject it just kicks me pack to help page. Any suggestions anyone.

I made several blogs but adsense had disapproved me. Has anyone been able to get approval after having been disapproved?
