Is it right to search on your own site?

If you've added an AdSense for search box to your page, you're probably aware of the relevant search results it provides your users. That being said, a few publishers have asked us if it’s a violation of our program policies to perform searches in their own AdSense for search boxes. The short answer is no, this activity is not explicitly prohibited by our program policies.

However, we strongly advise against using your own AdSense for search box for a couple of reasons. First, it can increase the chance of accidental or invalid clicks on the ads that appear on the search results pages. Second, this will inflate the number of queries in your reports, giving you an inaccurate picture of the activity on your site.

If you’d like to use Google search, we recommend visiting Google.com or installing the Google Toolbar. And if you're using Google Chrome, don't forget that you can type search queries directly into your address bar.

I use Mozilla and I can use the address bar as a search engine (Google, of course, does the work) or if the keyword matches, Mozilla will take me straight to a website (sort of like the "I'm feeling lucky" button on the Google homepage, with the exception that you don't really have to click on it).

If you want to search your own site without using your own Google custom search boxes, you can of course go to any ordinary Google search box and type:

"[search terms]site:mysitename.com". It does the same job without the risks you highlight.

That would be crazy. I'd take off the search box if I can't use it. I have countless blog posts and to reach them I need the search box. Wordpress has a useless search box which shows all the site content in results.

If I'm going to have to use Google to search I'd rather use Google Site Search than the AdSense search.

Google Chrome is really very fast and better than IE, but until I started to use Firefox, I felt in love with it, I am not going to use Chrome, but I will support it, I am a Google fan, haha

I use my custom search all the time, since it lets me rapidly locate things on both my blog and my wiki (http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=004639413897245343187:gpccmifz6mw).

I appreciate being able to query both places without adding a bunch of arguments to Google searches, and I naturally never click the ads myself.

I just wish the search actually worked on all parts of both pages. Sometimes, a search for a word of phrase present in a blog post or wiki entry will not yield it as a result - presumably because that particular page isn't indexed.

One should not make search on his/her own search box because if you do , you will disobeying the rules and regulations of Google Adsense. Again it will be bad for you to click on your own ads that is ads on your blogs site after being warned by Google. Although, there may mistake arising from the fact that those you are teaching Adsense Program with your web address may do so. To me no child of God will do that.

there should be a exception for the Search. The reason I used my search box is that it's a lot easier than typen xxxxmysite.com before entering the search string...
Google has to find a solution for this. What good is it to have a search box I cannot use?

Well I'm glad to know it's not against policy to use your own search box, because the reason I made the adsense search, which only searches a list of specific websites that I spent a lot of time collecting, is to faciliate my research. In fact, that's what started me creating my whole blog - because I could make my own search engine and only search websites I needed. (Only websites that carry statistics.) and I don't have to sift through Google's searches that I sometimes get aggravated with because they are based more on search engine optimization techniques by webmasters (I write SEO articles) than relevant results for me. Many times, the information I find is on some of the least optimized webites. The adsense is an afterthought - kind of like, I have this up here - might as well throw some ads in. And I'm intelligent enough to avoid clicking my own Adsense ads - by accident or otherwise. That reasoning - don't do something because you might do something by accident - fails to entice me to not do something. That's like saying, don't drive a car because you might hit someone by accident. If you're capable of putting up adsense ads, you should be capable of not clicking on your ads. They are differentiated from the search results, in fact, if I recall correctly, the ones at top are separated by a bar.

But, that's my two cents. I'm very happy to hear it's not against policy. But then again, if it was, I'd just take down the adsense and make a search engine from somewhere else.

Hi I have place the search engine on my travel/holiday site. i.e. If the go onto the "England" page they could type in "hotels in Bath" which will then take them to the Google search page for that term. How do I then earn money, only if they click onto a paid link, or any link?

Pernita said...

I just had google search on my page and my adsense was disabled when the earnings reached around $10 in about a year. The reason google gave was "my search was affecting other adsense and adword users". How could one publishers search affect other adsense & adword users? I'm very dissapointed with goole for there is no justification in this action.
Or could it be a google policy to discourage the newbies?

We had one of our client's accounts disable from Google, as they said we were using our search box to generate ad revenue. (which was incorrect as there was only two people in the company and we knew what we were doing). Anyway, we tried to challenge this but of course, Google was too big to really address our 5 attempts to read our "plea". we even resorted to pen and paper.
The Google decree was "Disabled Account for Invalid clicks". I would strongly recommend not using Search from your own site. . Once the account is banned, you lose all google rights and no opportunity to defend. It's guilty until never proven innocent because we don't read your replies... OK, a little bitter, but we found out that we are now having our Search Box features automatically turned on so the results pages show our "web page" - which just started this week. So, we are reluctant now to search from our own pages! We sent a message to Google today requesting that we not be penalized should this happen to us (not our clients) this time, but I expect Google will never respond.

Adsense is a SCAM. They give you an account you build your hits, then they take your account away for NO REASON and keep all the money. It happens to 90% of the sites..Why do you CONSTANTLY SCAM PEOPLE?

How do you know if Adsense for Search is installed correctly if you can't click on it to find out. I THINK I have it installed on my three sites but Adsense overview keeps saying "Adsense for Search - No Data Available".

And tells me to install Adsense for Search.

I'm happy to see that using your own search box is not against the rules as I only wanted to see if my results page on my own site was working properly.

Thanks for this information.
