Seeing clicks but no revenue?

Friday, August 15, 2008 | 10:39:00 AM

Labels: ,

Have you ever checked your reports and noticed that you have clicks reported, but no revenue? We'd like to explain why this may happen, as we frequently receive emails and questions on our Help Forum about this issue. What you're seeing may be due to one of the following:

  1. Allowed Sites setup

The Allowed Sites feature allows you to specify a list of sites where ads from your account may be displayed. If you're using this feature, you'll need to make sure that you've listed all sites where you'd like to display your AdSense ad code.

To check if this is the case, log into your account and visit the 'Allowed Sites' page under your AdSense Setup tab. If the radio button 'Allow any site to show ads for my account ' is populated, you're not being affected by this issue, and you should continue to #2 below. However, if 'Only allow certain sites to show ads for my account' is populated, review the list of sites in the box below -- are all the sites you own listed in this box? If the answer is 'no', you won't be credited for clicks on the missing sites. Please be sure to add all of the sites where you'd like to display your AdSense ad code.

We've noticed some confusion among publishers who have entered the sites of advertisers they'd like to see on their pages into the Allowed Sites list. Please know that this is not the case, as it's not possible to request ads for a particular page - the sites you enter into this box can only be sites where your ads can be placed.

  2. Invalid clicks

It's possible that you have some clicks that our monitoring system has considered to be invalid. As we've mentioned before, we monitor all clicks and impressions on Google ads for any activity that may artificially drive up an advertiser's costs or a publisher's earnings. Any clicks that our system considers invalid will still appear on your 'Overview' page, under the Reports tab. However, because our advertisers aren't charged for these clicks and impressions, we won't show the earnings for this activity. If you're concerned about suspicious activity in your account, we recommend reviewing your site's logs and letting us know about the situation.

Rest assured that AdSense accounts are properly credited for all clicks and impressions we consider to be valid. We'll post your finalized earnings for a given month on your 'Payment History' page during the first week of the following month. For more information about invalid clicks, please review our Help Center.

Google recently disabled the ads on our website and refuses to give a reason. Interestingly, it did so after we had posted ads for four months and were just about to reach the $100 initial payment mark. It seems that Google has resorted to thievery.

I checked my adsense reports about an hour ago, no clicks. Bt now I have 9 clicks Hooray! but no earnings.... is there a delay between when clicks are reported and when earnings are updated? I fonally get some clicks after optimising my site! does google consider them invalid?

One thing I've thought of that would be nice is a way that adsense users could set specific IP addresses as 'no-revenue'. An IP address set to 'no-revenue' would show ads and allow clicks as usual, but any clicks done from that IP address would not be charged/paid.

The reason I thought of this is that my co-workers regularly visit my sites (news sites and blog sites, primarily) and, while I've repeatedly asked that they not click the ads, some times they do. I'm rather concerned that this little bit of activity will be seen as bad clicks and that my sites may be banned for it as the IP address they all use here at work is the same, as is my own here at work.

Jake said...

I like your idea Jay! Google should think about doing that! My blog is about my neighborhood and MANY of my neighbors read my blog and click the ads constantly. Then they tell me, "I just made you some money!" I try to tell them that the clicks will be invalid and might result in getting my account deleted but they won't listen!

alexelliott said...

I was wondering about this too.. I mean I'll assume one feature of the google 'fraud' detection is that they'll find clicks in your local area and cancel them..

But what if you legitimately gave the site out to all your friends? You'd be getting real ad impressions and CT but they wouldn't count?

It's smart.. but needs to be improved..

But the funny thing is! I betchya everyone who says "check out my site" says "oh, and maybe press an ad or two also"

can speech be traced? nope..

Jay said...

alexelliot: I'm sure there are far too many people who do such, and I rather thing a lot of the people who cry about being innocent when they get banned are guilty of just that. I think that the people who are serious about using adsense for revenue do quite the opposite, though, as I have, and ask the people not to click.

It's just not worth it to lose out on all the potential revenue over a few dollars of fraudulent clicks.

Hi,

I’ve just checked my AdSense account and my earning stats looks suspicious and my eCPM not active. I’m afraid someone has click-frauded my AdSense ads and make my Ads just PSA (Public Service Ads). Could you please take a look and check my site's stats?

Thanks in advance

I have a very legitimate financial site that is still fairly new and
is just starting to really pick up in revenue. I recently added ad
links and the revenue went up dramatically. Unfortunately, as I am
involved in the market myself I made a mistake and clicked on a few of
the ads because I was interested in purchasing the products myself.

There was no intent to game the system and the clicks by me are very
few (perhaps .3%) in comparison to legitimate clicks. I don't make
any money anyway off of clicks since my traffic is still fairly low...
only purchases generate revenue... so there was really no gain for me
to do this... it was simply a mistake.

The website is beginning to take off and has the potential to earn a
tremendous amount going forward as I integrate my science education
with tools in the market and start to pick up readership. In the last
month alone the earnings have doubled. Maybe that is why the system
thinks I am doing something wrong?

I was not aware of reports showing invalid clicks or any other activity until I read about this recently. I have experience in science and the markets... in ad sense... not so much. I figured that with a company like Google as long as I wasn't clearly trying to cheat I could focus on the site content and not worry about the rest.

Permanently invalidating my ad sense account would be a lose lose for everyone... as I am just starting to gather a large reading audience that would drive revenue for google and for myself... and such invalidation, in light of the fact that this was due to unfamiliarity with the system and no false intent, would really leave a bad taste in my mouth permanently when it comes to Google as a company.

I am considering appealing but want to know if this method can
actually be effective (since this was a mistake, and one I would never
repeat again) or if the appeals process is always a fruitless
endeavor.

Has anyone else appealed? What were the results? Has anyone appealed
and been able to straighten things out? Is there the ability to email
or talk to anybody in person to explain the situation?

Thanks...

dogtails said...

My account has been stopped, no reason given, they say wait 24 hours for the appeal so I will, otherwise I have advertisers lined up so I have to make a decision, I can't afford to sit around while a billion dollar company who knows nothing about my little one, takes a bite out of my revenue. Boy I hope I'm a big guy one day!
So here's wishing me good luck and hoping whatever the reason they banned me for has been sorted out in the appeal. No matter what it's onwards and upwards!!!

evelynplace said...

you have the right to file an appeal and see what happen. Just because you made a few invalid click it should not have caused you such a big problem. Please let us know the name of your new revenue until other matters (clicks) are straighten out maybe we can help. I am in the process of location other companies who need your service and just as well and do appreciate good workers. Welcome aboard my TEAM!!!Please keep me posted!!

dogtails said...

I am sorry to disagree with evelynplace but I hope you are not inferring I EVER made any clicks on my own website, I did not do that and I have made an appeal and I am awaiting the response as I clearly indicated. You may well be talking to someone else but I am not on your team...I have my own team and we are very happy. My advertisers are relavent to my business. Please do not try and solicite business from me thank you.

this system is not good, they made money through us then disable our accounts, they are cheaters...,

We have an opposite issue, despite the fact that we have had dozens of new sites displaying our ads (with thousands of impressions aday!), the number of impressions, and revenue has stayed the same as for the main site. We suspect a fraud by Google adsense and do intend to take action. Our script is an open source, free CMS script (www.web-app.net) and our AdSense Perl module was created by Google approval and guidance. Many of our users choose to keep the ads and not to change the AdSense number in order to support our CMS project, if this is the reason why AdSense disabled (or keeps for itself..) the revenue for those impressions/clicks it is quite serious and would under no doubt be ruled as a fraud by any court system.

Jay said...

webapp, you're saying that you have lots of impressions/clicks but no revenue? What are you using to replace adsense in the case of no ads for the content on site? Public Service ads? Ads from another source? Could be that the majority of your clicks are hitting non-paying ads.

Beyond that it seems that there are a variety of things Google seems to keep an eye out for that help them reduce fraud against their advertisers. It is quite possible that some people out there are simply clicking away at your ads in hopes of sending revenue (because they like your product) and some of that is getting caught as spam clicking and such.

I've seen a good bit of success with adsense for myself and find the belief that Google is playing games to generally be unfounded. The fact of the matter is they're not going to do things that will end badly for them. It's not worth an extra few bucks if it could cost them their untold daily fortunes that they make off this program.

webapp said...

Hi Jay and thanks for your message,
I am afraid that my post was not so clear, so I would try to explain again.

The main issue is about the number of impressions for itself, when we started using adsense on one site only (one year ago) and until today we have had no change whatever with the number of impressions nor with revenue. This does not make sense at all, because during the last year, there were dozens (if not hundreds) of sites that have been showing adsense ads under our account, we would expect the number of impressions to be atleast 100 times bigger... but it stays the same, this is very peculiar and I assume that it has to do with a misunderstanding on google side, if it was a smaller company I would say that this is a clear fraud case and would seek legal actions, BUT this is google! Why would google bother stealing few hundreds (maybe thousands) usd from an open source organization?

Further more, there was no clicks abuse as far as I am aware of, we NEVER asked our users, nor developers to click those ads, on the contrary we made it very clear that this is not our way, we were also very opened with the adsense team and asked them to approve our adsense perl module before distributing it with the CMS, and it was approved after few changes as requested by adsense per email to us on WebAPP.

We are totaly clueless, this looks very bad for google. Is there anyone else having a strange feeling, that google is not showing the true number of impressions/clicks and revenues? What sort of control one has on the adsense services? Can one trust it?

Chetan Crasta said...

I wish somebody would help me with this:
I opened my AdSense account about 3 months ago. I display the ads on my blog destination-code.blogspot.com - it is just a blog of my study notes.

My earnings before my account was disabled was $0. And yet, on September 10, 2008 my account was disabled for "fraud"!
What possible "fraud" could I have committed - there were no clicks on ads whatsoever - only a few page impressions. My earnings were $0.

Perhaps Google doesn't care about "small" customers like me who are trying to legitimately earn a little money. They very haughtily say that no reason can be given for the account being disabled. They won't even communicate to let me know that my appeal was rejected!

I hope that some day Google will have enough competition for it to start being nice to their customers.

I am very disappointed.

I've just done a small test by limiting the ads to our main site, and waited to see the list of "unauthorized" sites displaying our ads.

This test resulted with shocking results, showing under no doubt that adsense has been giving itself our revenues for all sites not located on our main site which still display our account number in over a year now!. Adsense did not even bother informing about those sites in this list, we are talking about over 1 year period without informing us or those "unauthorized" sites about it.

Expected lose of at least 10,000 impressions a day with a corresponding number of clicks, probably few thousands USD, not a big money. But certainly very annoying. I assume that the cause for it is a mistake/error. An will notify adsense about it.

MY ADVICE TO ALL OF YOU, KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN, MISTAKES DO HAPPEN!

I recently ran a test of two of my websites that are unrelated to each other except for being built by the software. I DID THIS because I suspected that something was amiss. The sites have been up for months and not one click on any ads. I have the URLs themselves as a channel to track the entire site(s).

I had someone from a PC not related to me or my IP address click on only one ad, let the Ad page load for a minute, etc. to test to see if I got the click registered and the revenue.

In Google reports, the website URL channel showed that the person had visited the page but there was no click in the Adsense column nor any revenue. I double checked my pub id and it was correct. I tried this test two days in a row on two different sites that I built using automated software which builds 25 page sites with articles and adsense ads. I am in a panic.

No adsense revenue from these two clicks. I waited until the next day to make sure. Something is not right! I suspect that Google doesn't pay 100% of the time. I have a dozen other sites that I built from scratch that work fine. Not sure what is going on.

Anyone else suspect that sometimes Google 'misses' the clicks!?

I'm a newbie to this adsense lark, but having read these posts am i right in thinking that i will be punished financially for clicks from people in my general area even if they are complete strangers to me? I don't get a lot of clicks and prescous little revenue as it is, so it's easy to see that i'm getting clicks but no revenue for them. Surely google can cookie my pc, tell if i'm clicking ads myself and give relevant revenue for ALL other clicks regardless of where they come from?

Sherita said...

Ok, this is getting plain stupid! I'm quite sure that Google can come up with a better way to make sure someone doesn't click their own ads! Example, here at my office, we have almost 50 computers that all show the same IP, so that means that a co-worker can get me penalized if they even LOOK at my site and decide they want to check out a ad they might like, that's retarded! At home my personal router (wireless) when I go to an IP check site, just shows the router IP, so there has to be millions of people across the US with wireless routers that show the same IP as most routers just use a basic IP. So therefor If someone clicks my ad that's using the same "hidden" IP type routers I am, then I also get penalized.
This week I showed a total of 88 clicks, and made $2.72 WOW, it was not worth the work involved to get the ads up to make a whopping $0.03 a click! There are TOO many pay per click advertisers out there to put up with the trouble! I think i'm going to swap to linkshare, or bitserver.. or maybe both =)

Dan Cote said...

Adsense isn't registering my page impressions anymore. My analytics account shows 146 page view by adsense only show 10. Why the difference? Did Google Adsense ban my site for something? I didn't even have any clicks, i just want to know why it isn't counting my page impressions anymore.

bubbie58 said...

I am absolutely scared out of my wits! I have spent days and days getting my site just the way I want it. If Google shuts me down for doing nothing, what can be done? Looks like nothing. I really hate the stress of knowing I could wake up any morning and have my entire livelyhood taken away without an opportunity to know and fix the reason. I went into business so that I could control my direction. I guess Google has the control I fought so hard to relinquish.

It would be in Google's best interest to spend time shutting down those bogus, lying, scamming sites that claim to make you rich in hours...It's snake oil that Google let's people sell. They turn a blind eye to that so why not to the little guy who just wants to make a living?
Until I read these comments, I thought Google/AdSense was the best thing on the planet. i was so glad to be able to put together a team of professionals who would assist me in making my tiny little dream come true-to have a decent, respectable online business. I'm crushed to know differently...

Is there anybody else that does what Google does-or close to it? If so, I'll change-today! The stress of someone else being able to take my income without any notice is just plain wrong.
If they shut me down, I'll lose my income, I can't pay for my house, my car, my medicine, my groceries...It's cruel.

At least one can earn by actual clicks.

I always have impressions and some clicks, but no revenue. And this is discouraging becuase you guys get revenue and have no payment because you got disabled.

I blame all those scammer schemes on the internet forcing people to go on adsense and starting to open accounts etc etc.. i think google does not want to "waste" its money on us.. They just want the impressions and clicks, and 0 payments..

well that and the economy is messed up right now so this is probably why they are holding back on the payments...( i dont work for google), i have 1.36 on my adsense account and i had it open for 3 months already!!! :S :S :S :S

Today is day 9 for me with adsense, I think I'm doing ok but there are lots of clicks in my stats that don't show up in googls stats period. Those make me question, I would say 70% of them get seen.

In the 9 days I've had 8,479 impressions with 19 clicks according to google! My earnings are $8.79 but most of that came from one day. Average I'm making 60 cents a day but on the 29th I had 2 clicks which earned $5.28. So for my 9 days I have an average of .98 cents per day. There isn't a day some money has shown up.

My site for that 9 days was about 350 visitors average per day.

Now after reading this blog I'm scared my account will be shut down when I get near the $100.

the next step will be to have all my employees start tweeting, posting blogs, posting bulletins on myspace, updating facebook, contact our friend jan jeffcoat @ FOX NEWS and posting on our forums about our experience over the years working with google.

Not satisfied with the "one" answer but appreciate at least someone did answer.

I'm going to check again to make sure nothing on my end is wrong like allowed sites and wait another month if there is no change I might have to consider removing Adsense as a viable way to earn honest revenue. Your advertisers are getting free space and publicity at my expense.

It’s all about starting home business based on insurance and legal plans for a 36 year old cash-rich company. It is publicly traded on the New York Stock Exchange, and reports directly to the Securities & Exchange Commission. Their 15 consecutive years of RECORD growth... is 100% verifiable!

thanks,

Amazing to me that so many of clicks all of a sudden are considered invalid once I get some momentum (traffic) to my site. I think Google is hording some of my revenue, over 50% of my clicks this past week not credited ... BS.

I have a very2 small blog. maximum only around 50-visitors per day...tops! On a good month, can get around 3-4 US Dollards... which is equivalent to around 16-20++ clicks (depending on the ads I guess?)

This month (March 2010), I was surprised that I got $0.00 for 5-clicks??? Could it be possible Google has blacklisted me for being an invalid clicker? Like many others, I dont click my own ads :(

Is this a technical issue? Or has the the A.I. in the the Google system labeled me a cheat?

Hope this gets resolved... God willing...

To Fellow Publishers, I have just ALSO had my adsense account DISABLED for what I think is the biggest crock of SH#T I have ever heard! Here's a copy of the email:
Hello,

After reviewing our records, we've determined that your AdSense account
poses a risk of generating invalid activity. Because we have a
responsibility to protect our AdWords advertisers from inflated costs due
to invalid activity, we've found it necessary to disable your AdSense
account. Your outstanding balance and Google's share of the revenue will
both be fully refunded back to the affected advertisers.

Please understand that we need to take such steps to maintain the
effectiveness of Google's advertising system, particularly the
advertiser-publisher relationship. We understand the inconvenience that
this may cause you, and we thank you in advance for your understanding and
cooperation.

If you have any questions or concerns about the actions we've taken, how
you can appeal this decision, or invalid activity in general, you can find
more information by visiting
http://www.google.com/adsense/support/bin/answer.py?answer=57153.

Sincerely,

The Google AdSense Team
My website is nothing more then a FREE knowledge source! InfoBlog is a legit website and I have ALWAYS followed the strict rules! What's more after much hard work my account was up to $156 AND THAT WAS MEANT FOR MY 11Y.O DAUGHTERS 1ST LAPTOP AND SHE'S SHATTERED. Google, PLEASE rectify this problem because it is nothing more then complete B.S

lida I'm going to check again to make sure nothing on my end is wrong like allowed sites and wait another month if there is no change I might have to consider removing Adsense as a viable way to earn honest revenue. Your advertisers are getting free space and publicity at my expense. lida

i also had 4 clicks that generated 0.00 dollars. i really2 doubt people are clicking on any public service ads, as they dont come out on my blog .

In another case, (a few months back) one my lab mates (Im in a postgraduate computer lab) clicked four of my ads (he told me he did... I never asked him to do so!)... but in the end nothing was credited (since I was excited to see how much clicks other than his I had for that month)...

Maybe Google dont count clicks from the same IP or something? (since sometimes I update my blog in the same lab?)

Because I'm so new to this, I'm sure I'm asking a question that everyone else already knows. I just got my first 1000 page impressions and am wondering what the 'pay' is for that? Thanks in advance.

There are certain kind of flaws that the Adsense has and it is quite funny that Google has yet been unable to devise some way to actually rectify this!!

None the less, I have tried this policy of actually not promoting my blogsite to my friends at all!! Reverse Psychology, but worth a try ..!?

How do we know which ad has given what revenue?

I am writing this because I really need help.

It seems like ever since Sept 13, the majority of the valid clicks on my website have been labeled as invalid by Adsense.

It's strange, when I first get the click, it will total up and everything will be normal. Less than a few minutes later, my CPC goes right back down to 0, and the click doesn't count towards my total earnings. This is getting to be very frustrating; as I have had several clicks that were VALID these past 3 days that I am not receiving any earnings for.

It seemed like everything was just fine until midnight struck on Sept. 13. Then, all of a sudden, it seems like Adsense has been acting funny ever since. My blog gets a decent amount of traffic, and I get a few clicks a day. Most of these clicks never seem to count with Adsense. I also have a YouTube channel, and it doesn't seem to make any mistakes when it comes to clicks from my YouTube channel.

It only does it when I get clicks on my blog. I don't think that all of these clicks are invalid by any means. Most of them come from different users. I NEVER click on my own ads. Nor, do I encourage clicks on my blog site of any kind. My clicks come from genuine user interest. I have sent Adsense numerous reports hoping that they will fix the issue. I need to be properly paid for my clicks. I have gotten clicks all the way back to Sep. 13 that still don't count.

I am getting very frustrated; because I can't figure out why this is happening. Like I said, everything was fine until Sept. 13 at midnight. Then, all of a sudden, my CPC keeps going back to 0 every time an Ad is clicked on my Blog Site.

Can someone please tell me what's going on?

Thanks.
