A picture isn't always worth a thousand words

The maxim about the Internet is that content is king. While this holds true for AdSense publishers, there’s one important caveat: if it’s not text-based content, our crawler might not notice.
While we’re constantly working to improve our targeting technology, our crawlers need text to properly match ads to your pages. Although images, flash, and streaming video can help spice up a site, relying heavily on these sorts of elements will make it difficult for us to get a good read on what your site is about.
If your site uses a lot of these features, make sure you provide enough text-based content in one of our supported languages to effectively convey the topic of your site. If our crawler doesn’t find enough text, you may get poorly targeted ads or public service ads (PSAs). While we can't say the exact amount of text content that you'll need to receive targeted ads, we do recommend including complete sentences and paragraphs on your pages.
To improve your ad targeting, here are few other pointers:
- Use text in addition to images when possible. Please note that the crawler can't read text contained within images.
- If you use images, be sure to title them appropriately and provide descriptive ALT tags.
- Try imagining your site without pictures or dynamic content. This will give you a good idea of what our crawler reads. If you lack imagination, you can try turning the images off in your web browser.

Timely advice indeed!
I just noticed on a opensource software site I operate that the CTR was very low. Looking at the front page; I was getting all kinds of ads for grain manufacturing, hopper bins etc.
Completely unrelated to the content on the page (it was a fairly bland front page which provided only high level info and links to drill further into the site).
The images were silo.gif, silos.gif and silo-list.gif (16x16 pixel images).
Fixed easily; and higher CTR here we come (well that's the dream)

Thanks for this information. I have wondered for a fair while if Google took notice of the alt tags. It's a pity most people have no idea how to use them. I'm no expert on screen readers, but I do believe from memory that even the worst are capable of handling over 100 words, which leaves plenty of room to put in all the text on most graphics.

I have seen many sites with a lot images and wondered how the googlebot will figure them out. Hope at least webmasters will take corrective steps to get targeted ads...

This is some sound advice, but does this mean what is in your blogs sidebar too, does having a bit of clutter detract from having relevant targeted ads.
I am interested and quite rightly, so in providing relevant ads, so really it is more emphasis on content than anything else.

How the google is ensuring that Ads are displayed only on supported language websites? I have seen many websites in 'Telugu' language which have been displaying google ads for months.
Note: Telugu is one of south idnian languages.

I'm looking through my keywords, but it seems my Google Ads do not pay attention to them. I get Spanish ads on one site, when I've specified English. Then on another site I'm getting pedophilia ads. Let's just say I'm not impressed, and if the issue is not resolved soon, I'll remove all Google ads from my sites.

A burning question that I have:
I publish a site with many languages (supported and non-supported). I am very clear in my html tag the language of my content, for example:
<html xmlns="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" xml:lang="en" lang="en" dir="ltr">
For whatever reason, the Thai language is really hot on my site (~30% of my traffic, compared to ~15% for English). When a visitor would arrive on a dynamically created page in English, they would see an advertisement in Thai. I thought that this might be due to the fact that I have been using only one AdSense for Content channel for all the languages. So next, I split it up, putting all Thai language pages under a new channel (e.g. "Ad - Thai"), leaving the rest of the languages on the original channel. It's been about 5 days since the change, but Thai ads are still showing up on English pages. Consequently, my CTR for the English channel is super low (or much lower than before the Thai takeover). Is there a certain amount of time before AdSense "learns" that one channel only get Thai content, while the other gets (mostly) English? Should I break out every major supported language into its own channel, or does this not matter? Or should I use separate AdSense accounts for each language? I guess I need a solid way to tell the Mediapartners craweler that I am certain of the language. Is there a way to do this?
